Chevrolet Volt in the test: how economical is the E-car really?

The Chevrolet Volt is an electric car with petrol engine. This sounds confusing, it is however useful, because the gas makes the volt fully suited to daily use. On the first exit, it shows how much the drive consumed.
The future comes to quiet. In the case of the Chevrolet Volt, from November 2011 to buy is, they have the unusual dimension 215 / 55 R 17. For an eco-car like the Volt electric driving, this is a surprisingly large diameter, but for a 17-inch wheel, the Michelin energy saver is relatively narrow. This is the dimension wisely: first of all the comfort WINS, because these tyres better than smaller hit potholes.
Also Volt is good the proper filled wheel arch pronounced the Chevrolet. But above all the narrow wheels help to reduce rolling and wind resistance in order to give away no range. Finally, just that is the Achilles heel of electric cars. But not for the Volt, which breaks down the forced combination of electric and mickriger stamina.
Who wants to can with it routes over 500 km in attack take, at the time, and without break of load - however not completely electrically. Because in its lithium ion battery, it stores only 16 kWh, and to make possible electric driving according to factory specification between 40 and 80 km. Statistically, this distance is the most people for their daily routes. Should the trip go further 82 PS petrol engine of the Chevrolet jumps to volts, which for the 111 kW electric motor produces the electricity via the generator and can contribute directly to the power under certain conditions of a planet gear.
auto motor und sport was an idea of get now, how far the Chevrolet rolls out Volt on the market without gas. To make it short: before the 1, 4-liter four starts for the first time, 58 km can be electrically travel. Praise of the four-seater takes it for his balanced suspension, but above all a for his silent roles. This is not a matter of course, because the noise of an internal combustion engine is missing hookloaders, chassis, and wind noise as extremely annoying journeymen in the foreground can play. They don't do that in the Volt. Apparently the noise reduction is managed, and the silent trunks Michelin tyres are a good choice indeed.
Even when the gasoline engine starts, nothing serious is changed to the noise level. It shall exercise while the auxiliary engine, but he working discreetly grumbling in the background. Only a new experience is that the noise does not continuously changes with the accelerator position. Because the gas runs with four specified speeds, which can vary between 1,400 rpm and 4800 RPM. So he needs to work not in inefficient supply load areas. Subjectively, the Chevrolet loses volts in the petrol but a little bit of the liveliness that characterized him as an electric car, although the curb weight is a lot of vehicle mass with 1.715 kilograms.
The question of how the fuel consumption of the Chevrolet developed volts, if the battery provides no juice and would like to for four hours on the charging socket is exciting. In what sizes is the consumption of gasoline on long-haul expected to should remain, shows a first round, in which there were 7.2 liter - not a bad value for a middle-class car in view of the necessary performance - the top speed is limited to 160 km/h-, but also not very economical. But who looks at the volts stubbornly on the consumption of gasoline, has not understood it. It will be used just as a plug in hybrid, where mainly the internal combustion engine ensures the thrust, but as electric car, the petrol engine is only in the exceptional case.
The complex two-motor engineering makes the Chevrolet Volt 41.950 euro expensive. A bargain is thus certainly not, but at least lower than the technically identical, somewhat better equipped Opel Ampera for 42.900 euro. Chevrolet granted battery on the whole car, including 160,000 km warranty, which covers the first 13 years of his life at least statistically in the performance usual in Germany.
The clientele is already snake despite the high price - this alone is a very positive experience for Chevrolet.
How sparingly is the Chevrolet Volt if one compares him with an extremely economical diesel? When scale is used in this case a BMW 320 d efficient Dynamics Edition, provides in about the same space for the passengers and on a comparison round parallel to the Chevrolet Volt is riding. The 34,300 euros expensive BMW consume six litres - a value that does not change at constant travel profile - regardless of the length of the route on 100 km exactly.
In the electric car with ranges can, consumption, however, is fundamentally different. On the first 100 kilometers the 16 kWh uses the Volt first from his battery, before at km 58 the gasoline engine starts and burns on the following 42 km 3.3 litres of petrol. For the subsequent 100 km, there is then a consumption of about 7.2 L / 100 km, which gives you a total distance of approximately 500 kilometres in a fuel tank capacity of 32 litres.
The more fuel-efficient drive is still the diesel on extended tours, but here not even a competitor wants to make the Volt to the Variant. Rather, he assumes the role of the talented short guide, which conveniently move in the morning traffic to leave without fossil fuel to burn and to emit exhaust gases directly to the car.
It recognises electricity 20 cents with him as a prize for the kilowatt hour and takes into account the load losses, each electrically driven kilometers costs about seven cents. With a diesel price EUR 1.42 per litre you pay currently around 8.5 cents in the BMW for the k-M.
